Projection without a projection surface
Got $18,600? Then you too can project an image in mid-air. IO2's Heliodisplay is one of the more promising attempts at this that I've seen on the web. They do a better job than most at answering some of the frequently asked questions in their technology page. As they explain there, this display is planar, not volumetric, so you can't project 3D volumes. However, they note at the bottom that volumetric display is theoretically possible.
