E-Tech notes   Feb 13,2004
He and his company are doing a "Wireless Roadshow to teach local technology NGOs how wireless technologies can be used to bring Internet and intranet connectivity to those parts of the world not included in the plans of the commercial telecommunications companies."... Lili covered the history of the social computing group really well, and gave great context and setup for Wallop, an environment they're working on which maps and organizes relationships between you and the people you care about, through emails, photos, shared work, and other documents.

Everything I Know   Oct 13,2005
Everything comes from Rory Hamilton, who taught at the Royal College of Art's interaction design program. It's a collection of his notes on topics from applying to design school to setting a good project brief to what interaction design is.

Hello World!   Sep 2,2003
Since I'm expecting students to keep some form of web journal, I figured I'd try to keep a blog myself this semester. Every semester, I end up with a big pile of emails and notes in a folder marked "for website", containing links, ideas, etc. that I mean to get on the site, but haven't got time to review, edit, and post.

How Stuff Is Made   Apr 3,2005
April 03, 2005 Natalie Jeremijenko and her students have started an excellent collective wiki detailing how stuff is made.... Sadly, many of the items' pages have been taken down, but those that are still up are well worth reading.

How to Find Useful Info in ITP Journals   Oct 20,2004
Here are a few google tips: add one of these lines to the end of your google search to search all pages on stage: site:tigoemac.itp.nyu.edu site:tigoemac.itp.tsoa.nyu.edu For example, LED site:tigoemac.itp.nyu.edu would give you everything ITPers on stage have ever written about LEDs.... Keep this in mind when writing journals; it will make life easier for you, your classmates, and future students if your notes are easily readable and searchable, and if they include standard terms on the subject you're writing about.

Notes from O'Reilly Emerging Tech Conference 2005   Mar 17,2005
It's the last day of O'Reilly Etech, and there's been a number of useful things happen here.... Here's a few links, from Erik Smartt's talk and from Dennis Crowley: A Python series 60 wiki Matt Webb pointed out that the new powerbooks (after January 2005) have a built-in accelerometer, and he's posted a link to a tool for accessing it and scripting it.

Parasitic computing is an interesting   Aug 30,2004
From the site: "Parasitic computing is an example of a potential technology that could be viewed simultaneously as a threat or healthy addition to the online universe.... These protocols can be exploited to compute with the communication infrastructure, transforming the Internet into a distributed computer in which servers unwittingly perform computation on behalf of a remote node.

Popular Mechanics covers   May 4,2004
Popular Mechanics keeps a gallery of all their covers online. A nice way to spend a few minutes procrastinating.

Sketching 06   Jul 6,2006
Hosted by Mike Kuniavsky at the Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan in June 2006, it was a meeting of a handful of microcontroller module developers, teachers, and hardware designers. There was much conversation about what makes good microcontroller hardware, how best to teach it, and what we can do to make some of the various platforms out there more interoperable.

Tactical Tech   Sep 14,2003
From their site: "The Tactical Technology Collective (Tactical Tech) stands at the crossroads of the NGO and technology sectors. Through building links between them, we aim to help establish an accessible baseline of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) needed by all NGOs (i.e. if applicable computers, internet access, e-mail, mobile communications, etc.) and their integration beyond rudimentary usage into an integrated strategic tool for planning, advocacy & campaigning."

Taxonomies of networked objects; archtectural coincidence   Sep 2,2003
One service they can deliver is the ability to affect other networked objects, in which case they also function as paired devices (cf home alarm systems, Alzado.net) Community Devices for example, the Lovegety.... In class, we discussed how different locations might affect the responses, as some people might not want to push "Lousy" in a very public space; how placement near the boss' office or the conference room might skew the answers; and so forth.

The FAQs of Physical Computing   Jun 4,2004
Physical computing takes a hands-on approach, which means that you spend a lot of time building circuits, soldering, writing programs, building structures to hold sensors and controls, and figuring out how best to make all of these things relate to a person's expression.... -end repeat, then you're in good shape If you're a full-time student at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, then you'll be taking an introductory programming course at the same time as you take physical computing.
